1. The world has made strong and sustained progress in reducing extreme poverty, but this is now being undercut by higher prices - particularly of food and oil - and the global economic slowdown, according to the UN’s Millennium Development Goals Report 2008.

2. Direct upcoming rescue package (approximately $750B) directly to the American people to resolve current credit card and mortgage debt. The govt. should allocate up to $200,000 to each homeowner to help alleviate debt and infuse the economy. Govt can work to ensure specific percentage of funds are used to pay current personal debt providing appropriate oversight. Bottom line...resolve the issue by addressing the root cause.

3. It's simple:

• Anyone who already has a mortgage automatically qualifies

• One package available: 30-year fixed

• Below-market interest rate, but high enough to be budget-neutral when balanced with the long-term T-bills that would finance the program

• And the kicker: FULL RECOURSE. I.e., if the borrower defaults the federal government has options beyond foreclosure that allow it to recover the full principal of the loan.

This plan would increase middle-class cash flow significantly and for the long term; it would stem the tide of foreclosures and soften if not end the housing-price crash; and it would only be available to people who…

4. Its time to end the dept in America.

This act will make sure the power is returned to the president and not the few powerfull people who have the money (and the banks).

Privately owned banks should not be able to create money nor should they be allowed to lend money (that they do not have) at interest.

5. Sec. Robert Gates is one of the people who politicized intelligence. He is one of the people we thought we were voting out of office. He will use his remaining time to destroy evidence of torture and fraud. We need a new Sec. of Defense.

8. Dear amazing person,
Please plow up part of the White House lawn and organically grow the food needed for the first family and White House staff. The American people would save money on the White House grocery bill, while still employing agricultural engineers and farm interns. Fellow Americans would have an example with which they can relate directly with the President while saving money, eating locally and getting in touch with our earth.
Thank you,
you really rule,
Melanie Lewis

9. First Principles dictate that the guarantee of Life ranks first among the unalienable Rights clause in the US Declaration of Independence of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". Without honoring life, one can not be in a free and just society.

10. Retirement should not be just tied to the stock market (401) or social security, but, like taxes that help fuel a government, guaranteed government securities should be made either mandatory or optional for one’s retirement portfolio. This kind of “tax” incentive might help government “collect” funds without having people find ways to reduce paying taxes.

12. the last thing this country needs is to further bloat the big three. they should work a pre-packaged bankruptcy, cut executive salaries, align worker incentives and start actually building the cars that people want.

13. We can not allow the cascading effect to the manufacturing industry in the US that would result from the failure of the Big 3 auto makers. Now is a time for real leadership which neither President Bush nor the current Democratic Congressional leadership appear willing to accept. Hopefully change implies a willingness to be bold and even temporaily unpopular in the face of the country's current economic crisis. The President elect has indicated support for government measures, but time is critical and if the current administration and Congress will not act now, he should step up to the plate and…

14. Rather than loaning 25B to a group of companies that will have trouble paying and still leave them weak and ineffective. Take the approach of giving them 25B to keep in business for another year. Allocate 5B for 10 Years to split research with them for next generation cars. And force 40 MPG in 10 years. Maybe they will not survive to the end but at least the country's energy efficiency will improve.

16. By replacing the 650,000 vehicle government fleet with hybrid vehicles, we put GM employees to work, save $500M per year in fuel costs and can refit the old GOV's to be hybrid and give them to the states.
Congress should OK the bailout to do this.

17. All of this talk of a bail-out for Detroit automakers misses the most fundamental point and that is the corporate culture that brought these huge companies to this sorry state of affairs. There is no public purpose served in saving them unless we can simultaneously restructure the manner in which top executives are awarded bonuses. At present they are only rewarded for short term, immediate gains and this is often at the expense of long-term strategy. Surely there’s a way to structure a bonus so that it is only good if the company is substantially better off in 5 or…
